“My father worked at TechPort,” I say.

“ Would I know him?”

“He left a while ago.”

“I just got to Par Mars about a year ago.”

A natural silence. He says he’ll call to see if we can arrange a time. We agree to this and he performs a sort of bowing motion.

When I get back, Doms has rearranged the condo. The fold-out bed is in the smaller corner, right beside the entrance to the kitchen. There is a large air-humidifying thing where it had been.

“What’s this?” I say.

She says calmly, “It’s my house, Leen. I can do whatever I need to do.”

Tonight I sleep in the corner where the dust is. Because they are starting their new business, they need the space for experimentation. I sleep among the artificial urine and blood.

They are planning to target sales to competitive athletes and their PR teams, schoolteachers, moviemakers, and employees who do drugs recreationally. On the coffee table and in shallow boxes all over the living room there are beakers with their own saliva, other people’s saliva, and urine. It’s mostly test urine, thick urine smell everywhere.

The rhythmic vibrations of my phone feel violent. It’s a text flood from Jean Paul about the manager of the art store. Two of the store’s employees, who’ve joined Jean Paul’s forum thread, have said that the manager has been following one of their younger colleagues around. He follows her to the parking lot and then tails her home, waiting outside her house for maybe half an hour, before driving off again. The young employee is too afraid to tell anyone about it, even her parents.

Jean Paul is typing. Preposterous. Disgusting. Perverse.

My phone continues buzzing as I fall asleep. A headache begins to develop. The bodily smells pulsating.
